Project entered in the LSAA 2016 Design Awards (Medium Structures, #4047)

Entrant: Fabric Structure Systems (Designer / Fabricator / Installer)

Location: Christchurch, New Zealand.   Completed: October 2014  Client: Cantebury Cricket Association

Team: Athfield Architects, Wade Design Engineers Ltd, Southbase, Fabric Structure Systems 

Application: The establishment of an international venue at Hagley Oval for the 2015 cricket world cup and beyond. This required the construction of a new world class cricket pavilion, out of which an architectural fabric was chosen.

Description

The architects (Athfield Architects) design brief required ‘no spectator interference’, which resulted in a ‘floating tensioned fabric canopy’ roof above, with associated slender support mast poles & tension wires.

The design shared in the recent rich history of fabric roofed cricket pavilions which offers an interesting, contemporary
form to the building that celebrates the occasion of international test cricket & lifts the pavilion above a purely utilitarian
grandstand.

Design Brief Summary

  • 5 x Individual conical fabric canopy bays.
  • Support Structure - Cables, Mast with a capped bale ring. Each bay connected by a gutter beam.
  • Interior 2 x Bays - Incorporated a liner to the function lounge ceiling for enhanced aesthetics.

·  As this was a ‘green fields’ site considerable integration was required with other tradesman during the build

Materials and Fabrication

Serge Ferrari - TX-30 Type II - This is for the outer roof. It was the first time TX-30 was used in NZ. Serge Ferrari - 802s - This was used for the internal liner in the VIP area. Hot air welders used on both the TX-30 and 802s.

Collaboration, Construction and Maintenance

Significant collaboration was required with Athfeild Architects, Wade Design Engineers, Homes Consulting Engineers, and key stakeholders in order to make certain all parties were well represented in the final solution.

The method of construction was dictated by the overall construction program which required multiple trades to be on site throughout the installation process. Therefore a high level of co-ordination was required by the project managers to ensure every facet was considered during this process.

Planned maintenance will be conducted in conjunction with the annual clean as specified.

Costs

The structure cost circa NZ$1.1m (From the ground up, steel and fabric).

Foundations and fit-out of the pavilion were completed by Southbase (the main contractor)
