Media Release Statement

Fabric Structures was proud to announce the successful completion of the re-roofing project for the West Grandstand at Yarrow Stadium, Taranaki in March 2023. This landmark project not only enhances the structural integrity of the stadium but also integrates modern design elements that reflect the cultural heritage and community spirit of Taranaki.

The West Grandstand, also known as the Noel & Melva Yarrow Stand, required significant upgrades to meet modern seismic standards and ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors. Declared earthquake-prone in 2018, the stand's renovation was imperative to maintain the stadium's status as a premier sports venue in New Zealand. Fabric Structures was tasked with designing, engineering, and providing a lightweight fabric roof solution that seamlessly fit the existing structural steel framework.

The re-roofing project involved meticulous planning and collaboration with key stakeholders. Our design team proposed the use of Serge Ferrari’s TX30-II, a high-performance specialty PVC membrane known for its durability, flexibility, and excellent light transmission properties. This innovative material is ideal for large-span structures like stadiums, offering both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits.

Our engineering team ensured that the new roof design adhered to seismic weight requirements, providing a lightweight yet robust solution. Major ground stability works and foundation tiebacks were completed and the old roof removed before we could begin onsite. New arches and DonoBraces were installed to future-proof the stand, with all existing steel repainted to match the new components.

The project was executed with precision, adhering to a strict timeline to avoid disruptions during the NPC rugby competition. This required careful coordination and sequencing of various construction elements. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure the new roof was installed efficiently and safely, with minimal impact on the stadium’s operations.

The new fabric roof offers numerous benefits, including improved weather resistance and enhanced natural lighting. These features create a more comfortable and enjoyable environment for spectators, athletes, and event organizers. Additionally, the use of high-quality materials ensures the longevity and durability of the structure, providing long-term value for the Taranaki community.

The re-roofing of the West Grandstand at Yarrow Stadium is a testament to Fabric Structures' commitment to excellence, innovation, and community engagement. This project not only addresses critical safety and structural needs but also enhances the cultural and aesthetic value of the stadium. We are honored to have contributed to the preservation and improvement of such an iconic venue in Taranaki.
