Media Release Statement: Kina building at Green School New Zealand

Fabric Structures was proud to see the successful completion of the fabric roof membrane for the Kina building at Green School New Zealand. This landmark project exemplifies our commitment to advanced engineering and sustainable building practices.

The Kina building, a cornerstone of Green School NZ’s innovative campus, features a striking fabric roof designed and engineered by our team. Utilising Hiroka’s HG102 HT, renowned for its durability and weather resistance, the roof not only enhances the building’s aesthetic appeal but also aligns with its environmental goals.

Our role in the project began with a collaborative approach to design. Working closely with architects and structural engineers, we integrated the fabric membranes into the building's complex geometry, inspired by Aotearoa’s coastal sea urchin. Building Information Modelling (BIM) was employed to ensure precise alignment with the structural steel framework and to address the unique challenges of the fabric’s flexible nature.

The fabrication process involved cutting the Hiroka fabric using advanced automated machines, ensuring high precision and adherence to the project’s stringent tolerances. Our team used state-of-the-art welding techniques to join the fabric panels, creating strong, durable seams capable of withstanding environmental stresses. Rigorous quality control measures were in place throughout to ensure that the final installation met all design and performance criteria.

The installation phase was executed with meticulous care, as our team fitted the fabric panels onto the building’s structural framework. This process required close coordination with the construction team to ensure a seamless integration of the fabric with the steel structure, resulting in a visually stunning and functionally robust roof.

Sustainability was a key focus throughout the project. The fabric was chosen not only for its insulation and acoustic performance but also for its recyclability and environmentally conscious production practices.

The Kina building represents a significant achievement in the field of fabric architecture, showcasing our expertise in designing, engineering, and installing high-performance fabric structures. We are thrilled to have contributed to such an innovative and sustainable project and look forward to seeing the Kina building continue to inspire and serve the Green School community.
