Media Release Statement

Missouri State University’s (MSU) innovative John Goodman Amphitheatre epitomises the fusion of cutting-edge design and environmental resilience, positioning itself as a premier destination for a diverse array of performances and events.

The John Goodman Amphitheatre was conceived to accommodate a wide range of activities, from concerts and theatre to lectures and cultural events. Faced with the challenge of creating a versatile space that could withstand varying outdoor conditions such as rain, wind, and sun exposure, the design team rose to the occasion. PVC TX30 was selected for its durability and weather resistance, ensuring the amphitheatre’s longevity and minimal maintenance. The design also incorporates retractable awnings and advanced sound absorption techniques to deliver superior acoustics and comfort for both performers and audiences.

The structural system of the amphitheatre features a series of integrated structural gutters, enhancing both its aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. The fabric and extrusions were meticulously curved in two directions, creating a dynamic visual effect while meeting various functional requirements. This thoughtful design approach also includes concealed electrical conduits within the structural tubes, maintaining a streamlined appearance and optimising space usage.

Material selection played a crucial role in achieving the project’s goals. The use of PVC TX30 and translucent glazing elements not only ensures resilience but also enriches the amphitheatre’s aesthetic, blending historical tent theatre traditions with modern architectural innovation. The slender double-column structure, along with suspended skylights, pays homage to MSU’s Tent Theatre legacy, creating a seamless interaction between interior and exterior spaces.

With a total project value of approximately AUD $1.65 million, the MSU John Goodman Amphitheatre stands as a testament to excellence in design, functionality, and environmental consideration, setting a new standard in outdoor venue architecture.
