The Sydney Football Stadium Roof project stands as a monumental achievement in architectural innovation and lightweight structural engineering, redefining stadium design in Australia. This remarkable project, executed in collaboration with the NSW government, along with some of Australia’s leading project architects, engineers, construction firms, exemplifies the extraordinary potential of tensile membrane structures.
The design of the stadium creates a cohesive architectural language that integrates the Stadium Domain, Seating Bowl, Façade, and Roof. The project’s brief required the roof to provide natural light transmission, thermal resistance, superior acoustic performance, and robust weather protection. These specifications led to the specification of a lightweight tensile membrane roof, with PTFE chosen as the primary cladding material.
The roof features massive PTFE panels tensioned over a lightweight diagrid steel frame. The PTFE material, Skytop FGT800, was selected for its exceptional durability, strength, and ability to transmit natural light, ensuring a lifespan of over 50 years with minimal maintenance. Additionally, the leading edge of the roof is clad in 4000 sqm of transparent ETFE, allowing sunlight to promote natural turf growth while offering weather protection to spectators.
The combination of the translucent PTFE membrane and clear ETFE film not only met all functional requirements but also created a visually stunning feature for the stadium. The roof's design maximises the strength of the tensile fabric, integrating it as a core structural component rather than just a cladding material.
