Media Release Statement
The Wangun Amphitheatre, commissioned by the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) was conceived as a vibrant cultural hub, and stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of traditional heritage and modern lightweight structure design.
Located in the heart of Gunaikurnai country, the Wangun Amphitheatre’s design is deeply rooted in cultural symbolism, featuring five elliptical tensile membrane canopies representing the five Gunaikurnai clan shields. A larger, delta-shaped roof canopy over the stage pays homage to the iconic boomerang, or wangun, in the Gunaikurnai language.
The canopies are made from Chukoh FGT-800 PTFE, an architectural fabric selected for its exceptional light translucency and superior fire performance. This material choice not only enhances the visual appeal of the amphitheatre but also ensures safety and durability, crucial given its proximity to native bushland.
Structurally, the amphitheatre features six overlapping cantilever canopies supported by slender tree-like columns. These columns, designed to reflect the surrounding gum trees, provide a visually striking yet functional support system, eliminating the need for internal columns and preserving unobstructed views for the audience.
As a landmark in both cultural celebration and lightweight structures, the Wangun Amphitheatre is set to become a focal point for community gatherings, performances, and cultural events. Its thoughtful design and execution highlight the power of collaboration and the potential for architecture to reflect and enhance cultural heritage.
