In an interview conducted shortly before his passing, Frei Otto, one of the heroes of tensile architecture and engineering, spoke of the Munich Zoo Aviary as his “best art building, architectural building”, a space where the same landscape transcended the thin-wire boundaries: where, in a structure that disappears against a blue sky, less truly is more.
Perhaps that’s why Tensys found it a joy to work over the past few years on the Singapore Mandai Bird Paradise, recently announced to open on May 8, 2023.
Lightness Against Brutality – that was Frei’s motto: man at peace with nature, with our buildings left to float like a whisper on the breeze. And it is my hope that Singapore’s aviary, over forty years after Munich’s, shall likewise melt into its surroundings – reminding all who pass through of the beauty of calm. Of those rare moments, before such sonorous birds, when for all the sound and fury of human life…we say nothing at all.
