Entry in the LSAA 2007 Design Awards (4002) Project Category "Internal and Sculptures"
Entrant: Taiyo Membrane Corp (MakMax)
Location: Essen, Germany. Completed August 2006
Client: Chris Bosse Architect: Taiyo Membrane Corp & Chris Bosse
Structural Engineer: Xiang Du (TMC) Fabricator(s): Taiyo Membrane Corp
Application and Function:
The design was created for the Zeche Zollverein ENTRY 2006 exhibition. The structure reflects the natural curves of bubbles and organic cells and translates these into a 3 dimensional space.
Design Brief
The design aims to model mirroring that of organic cells and soap bubbles.
Structural Systems
The structure’s shape was determined using finite element analysis software
Materials
The fabric chosen was Nyron Lycra and it was chosen because of the fabric lightness and its versatility allowing lighting and projection applications through the fabric at the exhibition. 120 sqm fabric only weighs 17kg and this made transportation of the structure to the site easy.
