APPLICATION OF PROJECT
Airport terminal drop off area roof
The New Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA) Description
The new Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA) at Kulon Progo Regency, serves the Yogyakarta Special Region, Indonesia, and is operated by Ankasa Pura. As part of the airport development, Fabritecture was contracted for the design & supply of ETFE pneumatic roofing as well as supply system and ducting.
The ETFE component of the roof comprises 84 2-layer cushions covers a plan area of approximately 14,314m2 and is part of an overall canopy integrating polycarbonate elements also, overall providing 18,900m2 of weather cover the exterior drop-off area.
DESIGN / FABRICATION / INSTALLATION BRIEF
Yogyakarta's Special Region in Indonesia is now served by the new Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA) at Kulon Progo Regency. Fabritecture’s contract covered the design and supply of 14,314m2 of pneumatic ETFE roofing as part of an overall canopy covering 18,900m2.
STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS
The roof provides 18,900 square meters of weather coverage to the exterior drop-off area.
MATERIALS
The ETFE roof creates an exciting yet functional space and the airport terminal. There is 14,314 square meters of ETFE, comprised of 84 double-layer pneumatic cushions. The bottom layer of the cushions features clear ETFE 250µm, while the top layer of 250µm ETFE has a 63% printed silver frit pattern on the ETFE. The ETFE pillows are grouped into 21 clusters of 4 cushions. The roof design resembles a native Indonesian flower design, Kawung.
FABRICATION
The ETFE cushions were designed to Indonesian Standard SNI1727-2013 risk category IV for a wind speed of 40 m/second. Design wind pressure was +0.50kPa and Design wind suction -0.90 kPa. 250µm ETFE was selected for the top and bottom layers of the cushion.
A detailed engineering analysis was undertaken to ensure that each ETFE cushion included in every skylight (3 per skylight) was designed with enough rise to ensure proper water run-off and avoid ponding. With the significant levels of rainfall in the area, this was critical to the cushion design. There were three geometrical options analysed. The extrusion was designed with a U channel to collect water, bird wire to prevent birds perching, and PVC flashing for waterproof finish.
COLLABORATION, CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE
The installation of the ETFE was complex. This was primarily due to the tight constraints of the program. We were working closely with other trades during installation, including trailing the steel and cladding installers. Extensive coordination was required throughout the installation to ensure that we could meet the scheduled deadlines. These deadlines were set around the opening plans for the entire airport!
COSTS
The Yogyakarta International Airport roof was valued at AUD$2.87m.

OTHER INFORMATION
The client was super happy with the project and the end results are extremely captivating. There were no quality issues from inspections and our delivery was on time and on budget. The ETFE cushion canopy lights up with bright colours due to an LED lighting system that is incorporated on the underside of the cushions.
