PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 

The Bank of Indonesia Millennial Function Hall ETFE dome, with a diameter of about 53 meters and spanning 2,700 square meters, is a remarkable architectural feat. Constructed from 325 ETFE cushions, the dome is celebrated for its striking appearance and excellent light transmission, allowing natural light to beautifully illuminate the space below.

DESIGN / FABRICATION / INSTALLATION BRIEF

The project requirements outlined by the client highlighted the need for a roof cladding system that allows substantial natural light penetration while meeting strict thermal and optical performance standards. In response, we proposed a custom ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) roof system, spanning 2,700 square metres.

Our design incorporated various frit patterns, ranging from a dense pattern at the bottom to a clear panel at the apex, to address both the aesthetic and functional requirements of the project.

The ETFE roof system not only delivers exceptional aesthetics and meets stringent optical and thermal performance criteria, but it also ensures complete watertightness. This solution successfully balances high performance with sophisticated design, fulfilling the client's needs and enhancing the overall project vision.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS

For the project, our project was tasked with designing and supplying the ETFE system for the dome, specifying the structural demands and requirements essential for integrating this material. The structural design was subsequently carried out by a local consultant, who developed the structural system based on the parameters outlined by the team. This process involved a thorough analysis of the ETFE system's requirements, considering factors such as unusual design loadings and specific ground conditions.

The final solution was achieved through a detailed examination of the dome's geometry and structural needs, ensuring that the ETFE system was effectively supported and integrated into the overall design.

MATERIALS

For the project, ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) was chosen as the primary material to satisfy the architectural requirements. The decision to use ETFE foil was driven by the need for the cladding element to be both transparent and watertight.

To meet the thermal and optical demands of the project, the design incorporated ETFE cushions consisting of two layers with an air chamber in between. The ETFE foil selected for this project ranged from 200um to 250um in thickness and was supplied by Nowofol, a German extruder. Nowofol was instrumental in providing the foil with a very short lead-time, ensuring timely project execution.

FABRICATION

The fabrication of the 2-layer ETFE cushions was carried out at Fabric8 Membrane Services using a series of precise techniques and equipment to ensure high-quality results. The process began with patterning, which involves creating accurate templates for the cushions. The next step was cutting the ETFE foil using a CNC plotter, a computer-controlled machine that allows for precise and efficient cuts.

The seams of the cushions were then welded in a controlled environment using a custom ETFE welder, which is specially designed to handle the material's unique properties. To guarantee the highest standards of quality, each cushion underwent rigorous testing according to a detailed regime before being packed and dispatched. The packing process was carried out under stringent structural constraints to prevent any damage to the foil and frits. This meticulous approach ensured that the final product met the required tolerances and performance standards.

COLLABORATION, CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE

To meet the project's demanding timeline, we reimagined conventional processes, compressing a typical 7-8 month Design and Construction schedule into just 3-4 months. Our approach involved agile collaboration across a global network, coordinating inputs and components from Europe, Oceania, and Asia despite the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. We implemented a dynamic project management framework that allowed for rapid adaptation and decision-making, ensuring timely procurement and delivery.

For the method of construction, we employed modular techniques to streamline assembly and enhance efficiency. The planned maintenance program includes a structured approach with regular inspections and proactive upkeep to ensure long-term durability and performance. This meticulous planning and adaptive strategy ensured that we met the project's tight deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality and resilience.
