Media Release Statement

The Bank of Indonesia Millennial Function Hall is a groundbreaking architectural achievement that features a striking 53-meter diameter ETFE dome. This innovative structure, encompassing 2,700 square meters and constructed from 325 ETFE cushions, exemplifies both aesthetic sophistication and advanced engineering.

The dome's design integrates a custom ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) roof system that excels in both form and function. Known for its impressive light transmission, the ETFE dome bathes the interior in natural light, creating a dynamic and inviting space. The design incorporates various frit patterns—dense at the base and clear at the apex—balancing aesthetic appeal with thermal and optical performance. This approach met the client’s stringent performance criteria and ensured complete watertightness.

The project’s structural system was meticulously developed to support the unique properties of ETFE. This involved a comprehensive analysis of design loadings and ground conditions, with the final structural system designed in collaboration with a local consultant. The geometry of the dome was carefully considered to integrate the ETFE system seamlessly into the overall structure.

Fabrication of the ETFE cushions was conducted by Fabric8 Membrane Services, employing precision techniques and advanced equipment to ensure high-quality results. The ETFE foil, sourced from Nowofol in Germany, was chosen for its durability and light transmission qualities. Each cushion underwent rigorous testing to meet exacting performance standards before delivery.

In an era marked by global challenges, the project team overcame significant hurdles to meet a compressed timeline of 3-4 months, thanks to agile collaboration across Europe, Oceania, and Asia. The construction used modular techniques for efficiency, and a proactive maintenance program is in place to ensure long-term durability.

The Bank of Indonesia's Millennial Function Hall, with an investment of approximately AUD$900,000, represents a remarkable blend of innovation, efficiency, and elegance, setting a new benchmark in architectural design.
