About this event

In today’s post-digital architectural era, a strong dichotomy exists between the increased agency offered by our design tools and the affordances given by many construction contexts – especially building environments of developing countries or those with limited available onsite means, skill, budget, or time. This lecture postulates that by incorporating computational power and incertitude as productive components in alternative design and materialisation processes, the locally available solution space for built architecture can be dramatically expanded and onsite ability and agency increased.

What gains do our extensive computational abilities bring to architectural design and construction in these contexts? How can the mechanisms driving this extensiveness be creatively and practically employed here? What happens when we radically disrupt the security of architecture’s standard reproductive infrastructure?

Illustrated through his highly unusual and provocative built work, Kristof Crolla proposes and applies an alternative computation-driven design and materialisation methodology that capitalises on digital design and production models’ propensity towards variability. The work demonstrates that identified methods can substantially increase the architects’ agency and local onsite affordance. In doing so, the talk challenges the extent to which computation can further impact architectural practice.

Innovation, Sustainability and Legacy

19 - 23 September 2022,Beijing, China

Note: See further down for revised deadline dates for submission of papers (Dates altered on Jan 29 2022).

The Format and Fees for the Conference have now been established and details are in the 4th Announcement which can be downloaded HERE

A major change is that the Conference will be held in a hybrid online and in-person format. The venue for the in-person format is at the Beijing Friendship Hotel, Beijing, China.

There are different fees for the two conference modes.

IASS Annual Symposium 2023 - Melbourne

Theme: Integration of Design and Fabrication

The IASS Annual Symposium 2023, will be organized by the RMIT University and the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, on 10 – 14 July 2023

Co-chairs of Local Organizing Committee: Professor Mike Xie (RMIT University) and Professor Jane Burry (Swinburne University of Technology)

The Venue is the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre

The IASS - International Association of Shell and Spatial Structures - was formed in 1959 and has attracted both the more academic and practical enthusiasts in the field. See the IASS website

Both Co-chairs have been supportive of the work of LSAA over many years and the LSAA in turn supports this International Symposium.

The theme of the IASS 2023 symposium is Integration of Design and Fabrication, which is becoming increasingly important with the developments of digital technologies in both design and manufacturing. The symposium covers all aspects related to material, design, computation, construction, maintenance, history, environmental impact and sustainability of shell and spatial structures in all fields of application. The symposium topics include (but are not limited to): conceptual design; computational form-finding; optimisation; computational methods for analysis; detailing and construction; advanced manufacturing; digital fabrication; shell structures; tension and membrane structures; inflatable structures; framed and lattice structures; gridshells and bending-active structures; tensegrity systems; adaptive systems; deployable and origami systems; advanced and bio-based materials; temporary structures; metal spatial structures; timber structures; glass structures; historical structures; teaching and education.

ICSA2022: Upcoming Abstract Submission Deadline

Please allow us to remind you of the Call for Participation for the upcoming ’5th International Conference on Structures & Architecture’ to be held at Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark in the period 6-8 July 2022. The Call for Participation is for Research Papers including calls for contributions to special sessions and mini-symposia organized by key researchers and for Critical Practices, which is a new experimental contribution format bridging research in academia and research in practice via physical ‘prototypes’:

Abstract Deadline for Research Papers: 28 February 2021 - Extended to March 15 2021

Abstract Deadline for Critical Practices: 1 May 2021

The 5th International Conference on Structures and Architecture is to be held in Aalborg, Denmark, July 6-8, 2022 (www.icsa2022.com )

Theme: "STRUCTURES & ARCHITECTURE IN A VIABLE URBAN PERSPECTIVE"

The International Conference on Structures and Architecture, organised by the International Association of Structures & Architecture, is the world’s leading and largest global conference bridging the gap between Structures and Architecture.

The contributions on creative and scientific aspects in the conception and construction of structures, on advanced technologies and on complex architectural and structural applications represent a fine blend of scientific, technical and practical novelties in both fields.

For the first time ICSA, the International Conference on Structures and Architecture is to be held in Aalborg, Denmark. It is a great pleasure for us to invite researchers and practitioners world-wide with a background in architecture and in structural engineering to the 5th ICSA conference.
